Chinese automaker XPENG has unveiled its all-new P7, a premium electric sedan designed to rival established German marques such as BMW and Porsche. With a focus on driving dynamics, advanced battery technology, and refined design, the P7 marks a major leap forward for the Guangzhou-based manufacturer.
Performance and Driving Dynamics of XPENG P7
The new XPENG P7 introduces what the brand calls “midlect electric drive”, featuring dual front and rear electric motors producing 595 PS (437 kW) and 695 Nm of torque. This configuration delivers a perfect 50:50 weight distribution, enabling a balanced, engaging drive.
- Acceleration: 0–100 km/h in 3.7 seconds
- Suspension: Dual-chamber air suspension for comfort and sporty handling
- Braking: Brembo four-piston calipers provide exceptional stopping power
On highways, the P7 prioritizes comfort, while in sport mode it tightens up to deliver the sharp responses expected from a driver’s car.
Advanced Battery Technology
One of the standout features of the XPENG P7 is its battery system. Two options are available:
- 74.9 kWh LFP battery
- 92.2 kWh NMC battery
The larger pack offers up to 820 km (Chinese cycle), translating to an estimated 600 km real-world range.
Thanks to its ultra-thin 109 mm battery design, the P7 benefits from a sleek aerodynamic profile, achieving an impressive drag coefficient of 0.201 Cd.
Charging performance is equally impressive: the 5C-rated battery enables ultra-fast charging, capable of adding 500 km of range in just 15 minutes on a suitable charger.
Exterior and Design Evolution
The P7 demonstrates a more restrained and globally appealing design compared to some of XPENG’s earlier models. Key highlights include:
- Active aerodynamic elements with deployable rear spoiler
- Forged aluminum alloy wheels—among the first on a mass-market EV
- Futuristic lighting with illuminated XPENG logo
- Hatchback practicality with 575 L boot space (expandable to 1,900 L with seats folded)
XPENG has refined its styling approach, blending influences from performance icons like the Nissan GT-R with the aerodynamic efficiency of rivals such as the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Lucid Air.
Technology and Interior of XPENG P7
Inside, the XPENG P7 emphasizes refinement over gimmicks while still integrating cutting-edge technology.
- Augmented Reality Heads-Up Display (HUD) projects navigation guidance directly onto the road view
- Swiveling central infotainment screen adjusts to driver or passenger position
- 23-speaker audio system for immersive sound
- Premium interior trims, with three color options: white, blue-gray, and black
- Rear-seat comfort enhanced by a panoramic glass roof and additional display
Voice control extends outside the vehicle, allowing owners to open the boot or execute functions via spoken commands, useful when carrying shopping or luggage.
Market Positioning and Pricing
XPENG has confirmed the P7 will be priced below 500,000 RMB (~$70,000), with entry-level models expected to start around 250,000 RMB (~$35,000 USD).
Unlike BYD’s high-volume approach, XPENG continues to emphasize technology leadership. The company is actively expanding into overseas markets, positioning the P7 as a flagship model against both established German luxury brands and emerging Chinese EV rivals such as Xiaomi and Huawei.
Outlook
The XPENG P7 represents a pivotal moment for Chinese EV manufacturers. By combining sports car performance, ultra-efficient battery technology, and advanced driver assistance systems, XPENG is proving it can compete with the world’s most respected automakers.
For global buyers, the P7’s balance of range, driving excitement, and advanced tech makes it one of the most compelling new EVs on the market.
