Volkswagen VW ID. Cross: 425 km Range, €28K Starting Price, Bold New Compact Electric SUV Coming in 2026, Premium Interior

Volkswagen has unveiled the VW ID. Cross, a compact all-electric SUV that signals a major shift in the brand’s design philosophy and product strategy. Positioned as an electric counterpart to the T-Cross, the ID. Cross is expected to launch in 2026 with pricing starting at around €28,000 for the entry-level model. Equipped with real buttons, durable interior materials, and a simplified design language, the SUV represents Volkswagen’s return to its core values after years of customer criticism.

Dimensions, Performance, and Range

The Volkswagen VW ID. Cross measures 4.16 meters (164 inches) in length, similar to the current T-Cross, but benefits from a longer wheelbase that increases interior space. It will be offered with two battery options:

  • 56 kWh (larger pack) – estimated range of 425 km (≈250 miles) on the WLTP cycle.
  • 38 kWh (smaller pack) – intended primarily as a city EV with reduced range.

Charging capabilities include 11 kW AC and DC fast charging from 10–80% in 20–25 minutes. The vehicle will be powered by a 211 hp front-wheel-drive motor, with a top speed of 175 km/h (110 mph), making it suitable for motorway use, including Germany’s Autobahn.

Design: Back to Volkswagen’s Roots

Volkswagen is taking a deliberate step away from over-styled exteriors and glossy, impractical interiors. The ID. Cross features clean, simple lines that echo traditional VW models like the Polo, Golf, and T-Cross. Highlights include:

  • Full-width light bar with an illuminated VW logo.
  • Optional Matrix LED headlights and pulsing turn indicators.
  • Wheel sizes up to 20 inches, with distinctive three-dimensional depth in the design.
  • Functional manual door handles, preferred for safety and practicality over flush designs.

Inside, Volkswagen emphasizes honest materials and user-friendly controls:

  • Rich fabrics, high-grade leatherette, and no piano black finishes.
  • Real buttons and switches for climate control and steering wheel functions, replacing unpopular touch-sensitive surfaces.
  • A 13-inch infotainment display and new digital instrument cluster.
  • Ventilated wireless charging pad, customizable ambient lighting, and optional glass roof.

Interior Space and Practicality

Despite compact exterior dimensions, the VW ID. Cross offers generous interior space for four adults. The rear bench height will be adjusted in the final version for improved comfort. Cargo capacity measures 450 liters, extendable by folding the seats flat for up to 2 meters (79 inches) of load length.

Volkswagen has also confirmed towing capacity of 1.2 tons and the option of carrying e-bikes via a 75 kg-rated coupling system.

Pricing and Market Positioning

The entry-level VW ID. Cross will start at approximately €28,000, though this version will feature the smaller 38 kWh battery. The more practical 56 kWh version with additional features is expected to cost between €38,000 and €40,000.

While not the cheapest option in the market, Volkswagen is targeting affordability through competitive leasing offers and company-car schemes, aiming to attract private buyers as well as fleet customers.

The Strategic Importance of the VW ID. Cross

The ID. Cross is more than just another compact electric SUV—it represents Volkswagen’s design direction for the coming decade. Alongside the electric Polo (2026), Polo GTI (later 2026), and ID. UP city EV (2027), this model will play a central role in Volkswagen’s small EV lineup.

With its combination of compact practicality, improved interior quality, and realistic pricing, the VW ID. Cross is positioned to become Volkswagen’s volume seller in the electric segment, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to customer-driven design.
